Beyond the Textbook

From statistics professor to Master Black Belt: A journey through three industries that revealed patterns textbooks miss.

The journey from statistics professor to Master Black Belt wasn't planned. It happened through failures that taught more than successes, patterns that emerged across unlikely places, and moments when textbook solutions failed completely.

With a Master's in Statistics and Economics degree, the foundation was academic. But real education came from semiconductor clean rooms where microscopic variations cost millions, oil drilling operations where safety protocols save lives, and hospital units where quality metrics reflect human outcomes.

Each industry taught different lessons. Manufacturing revealed the power of statistical process control when applied correctly. Oil & gas showed how safety cultures create operational excellence. Healthcare demonstrated how human factors amplify or undermine technical solutions.

But the most valuable insights came from working across all three. Patterns invisible within single industries became obvious when viewed from multiple perspectives. Solutions that worked in one environment often solved problems in another.

This platform shares those insights. Not theories, but tested approaches. Not best practices, but patterns that actually work when reality gets complicated.

The Journey Across Industries

Before 1990

Academic Foundation

Started as an economics instructor and statistics professor with Master's in Statistics and an Economics degree. Theoretical foundation in statistical analysis and economic modeling.

1990 - 2010

Operations & Manufacturing Excellence

Transitioned to semiconductor industry, building materials production, and large-scale retail operations. Learned how microscopic variations cost millions and developed expertise in statistical process control for high-precision manufacturing.

2011 - Present

Oil & Gas Mastery

Moved to energy sector focusing on operational integrity, cost savings, and HSE excellence across the upstream, midstream & downstream value chain. Optimized proceses in the world's largest major capital projects. Discovered how safety protocols that prevent explosions apply across industries.

2023 - Present

Healthcare Transformation

Applied cross-industry insights to clinical quality improvement. Transforming multi-hospital systems using patterns learned from platforms and factories.

Current Focus

Documenting these lessons for the next generation of process and operational leaders. The goal is to share insights that typically take decades to develop through direct experience.

Excellence shouldn't depend on having 35+ years to learn it yourself.

The patterns exist. The solutions work. Time to make them accessible.

The Dirty Dozen of Process Improvement

Resistance almost never looks like resistance. It looks like agreement in the room, followed by nothing happening. This 22-page report covers the twelve struggles that quietly end improvement work, the tell that gives each one away early, and one move to try on each. It arrives as soon as you subscribe.

By subscribing you are agreeing to receive Field Notes from me by email, roughly one short piece a week. The report comes first. Unsubscribe in one click, any time.
